I volunteered at our local hospital in 100 Mile House as a candy striper. A candy striper is someone that helps with patient care with things like delivering fresh water, ice, meals, watering plants, fresh towels, changing out books/ magazines, and having conversations and interacting with the patients. This experience allowed to develop a deeper understanding of how important interactions are, and how you choose to engage yourself can be a very important component in communicating. I learned through my interactions that’s the patients looked forward to speaking, and always enjoyed the company. There was a variety of different cultures, perspectives, and values that I was faced with each time I volunteered. With this, I found that it was important to understand that each individual looks at life differently, and I used this as an opportunity to open my own eyes to different perspectives, ways of living, and just general knowledge with how to approach life. This experience relates to global competency, because it allowed me to understand that there is a variety of ways to live, and that no way in particular is right, but depends solely on the individual and how they choose to live their life. I think this was a really important lesson for me, because it allowed and continues to allow me to understand that although you may not agree with something that someone does, it is important to respect there decision, because they are leading their own life to how they want.
